The Toilet

Here is Walter's Toilet. It was a bit of a challenge but fun to make. I hope you guys like it.

If you're having problems loading this page, you can download a PDF version of the pattern from Scribd.

The Toilet

Size
16cm/16.5in Tall, 16cm/16.5in deep, 12.5 cm/5in wide

Skill Level
Difficult. The pattern has many parts and uses different shaping techniques. It requires crocheting around a chain. You can find instructions on how to do this here. I’ve included photos of the different stages of joining and if you need any help, please get in touch.

Note on yarn and hook size
I crochet with a light worsted (DK) weight yarn. You can use a slightly heavier or lighter yarn as long as you use the same type of yarn for the different colours. This will ensure your project is in proportion. Use a hook size that will give you a nice firm stitch. The 3.00mm is my favourite hook.

Materials
Yarn
White (300m/320yds should be more than plenty)
Grey (Small amount)

Crochet Hook – 3.00mm or preferred size
Filling
Plastic pellets/dried beans and stocking
Tapestry needle
Thread and sharp needle

Terminology
***This pattern is written using US crochet terminology***
ch – Chain
hdc – Half double crochet. Yarn over hook, insert in stich, pull through all three loops on hook.
Loops – This term covers back and front loops of a stitch.
Rnd – Round
sc – Single crochet
sc2tog – Single crochet two stitches together.
sl st – Slip stitch
st – Stitch. This term covers ch, sc, hdc, sl st and other stitches used in crochet.

Make a ring – The starting point for crocheting in a spiral. Use which ever method you prefer.
* * - Repeat the instructions between the asterisks as directed.
( ) – The number of stitches that should be in a completed round are placed in brackets at the end of that round’s instructions.

Instructions

Toilet Bowl (in White)
Make a ring.
Rnd 1: 7 sc in ring (7)
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around (14)
Rnd 3: *sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc*  around (21)
Rnd 4: *sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc*  around (28)
Rnd 5: sc in each sc around
Rnd 6: *sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc*  around (35)
Rnd 7: *sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc*  around (42)
Rnd 8: sc in each sc around
Rnd 9: *sc in next 5 sc, 2 sc in next sc*  around (49)
Rnd 10: *sc in next 6 sc, 2 sc in next sc*  around (56)
Rnd 11-14: sc in each sc around
Rnd 15: *sc in next 7 sc, 2 sc in next sc*  around (63)
Rnd 16: *sc in next 8 sc, 2 sc in next sc*  around (70)
Rnd 17: sc in each sc around
Mark this row with a piece of coloured yarn.
Rnd 18: *sc in next 8 sc, sc2tog*  around
Rnd 19-23: sc in each sc around
Rnd 24: *sc in next 7 sc, sc2tog*  around (56)
Rnd 25: *sc in next 6 sc, sc2tog*  around (49)
Rnd 26: *sc in next 5 sc, sc2tog*  around (42)
Rnd 27: *sc in next 4 sc, sc2tog*  around (35)
Rnd 28: sc in each sc around

Form the bowl of the toilet by sinking the top of your work down. The coloured yarn that you used to mark round 17 should sit on top of the rim of the bowl. Lightly stuff the wall of the bowl. Stitch the outside of the bowl to the inside as shown in the photo, being careful not to stitch through the top round. You will continue to crochet in this round to form the pedestal the bowl sits on. Refer to photos below.

Rnd 29: sc in each sc around
Rnd 30: *sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc*  around (42)
Rnd 31-32: sc in each sc around
Rnd 33: *sc in next 5 sc, 2 sc in next sc*  around (49)
Rnd 34: sc in each sc around
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Base of Toilet Bowl (in White)
Make a ring.
Rnd 1: 7 sc in ring (7)
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around (14)
Rnd 3: *sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc*  around (21)
Rnd 4: *sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc*  around (28)
Rnd 5: *sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc*  around (35)
Rnd 6: *sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc*  around (42)
Rnd 7: *sc in next 5 sc, 2 sc in next sc*  around (49)

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for joining. Secure some plastic pellets/dried beans in some stocking and place it in the bottom of the toilet bowl. This is used instead of polyester filling to help the toilet stand a little better. I added some extra weight by putting in a couple of coins in as well. Stitch the base of the toilet bowl to the bottom of the toilet bowl.

Cistern (in White)
Instead of crocheting around a ring, the cistern is made by crocheting around a chain to give it a more oblong shape. Instructions on how to crochet around a chain can be found here.

Chain 15
Rnd 1: sc in second loop from end, sc in next 13 loops, ch 1, turn work upside down, sc in next 14 loops, ch 1 (30)
Rnd 2: *sc in next 4 st, 2 sc in next st*  around (36)
Rnd 3: *sc in next 5 sc, 2 sc in next sc*  around (42)
Rnd 4: *sc in next 6 sc, 2 sc in next sc*  around (48)
Rnd 5: *sc in next 7 sc, 2 sc in next sc*  around (54)
Rnd 6-10: sc in each sc around
Rnd 11: *sc in next 8 sc, 2 sc in next sc*  around (60)
Rnd 12-17: sc in each sc around
Rnd 18: *sc in next 9 sc, 2 sc in next sc*  around (66)
Rnd 19-24: sc in each sc around
Rnd 25: *sc in next 10 sc, 2 sc in next sc*  around (72)
Rnd 26-31: sc in each sc around
Rnd 32: * sc in next 11 sc, 2 sc in next sc*  around (78)
Rnd 33-40: sc in each sc around
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for joining.

Cistern Lid (in White)
The cistern lid will also be made by crocheting around a chain.

Chain 17
Rnd 1: sc in second loop from end, sc in next 15 loops, ch 1, turn work upside down, sc in next 16 loops, ch 1 (34)
Rnd 2: *2 sc in next 2 st, sc in next 12 st, 2 sc in next 2 st, sc in next st* twice (42)
Rnd 3: *sc in next sc, 2 sc in next 2 sc, sc in next 15 sc, 2 sc in next 2 sc, sc in next sc* twice (50)

Rnd 8: *sc in next 6 sc, 2 sc in next 2 sc, sc in next 25 sc, 2 sc in next 2 sc, sc in next 6 sc* twice (90)
Rnd 9-14: sc in each sc around
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Seat (in White)
The seat is basically a flattened tube. By working hdc and sc on opposite sides of the tube, it twists around into a circle. To avoid the tube twisting into a spiral, where the hdc and sc are placed in a round is adjusted every ten rounds.

Make a ring.
Rnd 1: 8 sc in ring (8)
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc (16)
Rnd 3-10: sc in next 8 sc, hdc in next 8 sc (16)
Rnd 11-20: hdc in next 2 st, sc in next 8 st, hdc in next 6 st (16)
Rnd 21-30: hdc in next 4 st, sc in next 8 st, hdc in next 4 st (16)
Rnd 31-40: hdc in next 6 st, sc in next 8 st, hdc in next 2 st (16)

Rnd 3: *sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc*  around (21)
Rnd 4: *sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc*  around (28)
Rnd 5: *sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc*  around (35)
Rnd 6: *sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc*  around (42)
Rnd 7: *sc in next 5 sc, 2 sc in next sc*  around (49)
Rnd 8: *sc in next 6 sc, 2 sc in next sc*  around (56)
Rnd 9: *sc in next 7 sc, 2 sc in next sc*  around (63)
Rnd 10: *sc in next 8 sc, 2 sc in next sc*  around (70)
Rnd 11: *sc in next 9 sc, 2 sc in next sc*  around (77)
Rnd 12: *sc in next 10 sc, 2 sc in next sc*  around (84)
Rnd 13: *sc in next 11 sc, 2 sc in next sc*  around (91)
Fasten off. Make two, leaving a long tail on one for joining. Place them together, the right sides facing each other (the side that faces you when you’re crocheting), and stitch them together. Leave a 5cm/2in opening and turn inside out.

Pipe (in White)
Stuff as you go.

Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around (10)
Rnd 3: sc2tog around (5)
Rnd 4-7: sc in each sc around
Fasten off and close up hole. Leave tail for joining.

Cistern Stand (in White)
Make a ring.
Rnd 1: 8 sc in ring (8)
Rnd 2: *sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc* twice (10)
Rnd 3: *sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc*  around (15)

Rnd 10: *sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc*  around (20)
Rnd 11: *sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc*  around (25)
Rnd 12: (work in back loops only) *sc in next 3 sc, sc2tog*  around (20)

Rnd 15: sc2tog around (5)
Fasten off and close up hole. Leave a tail for joining.

Assembly
***These are guidelines only. Be guided by your own eye at all times.***

Stuff the Cistern and join to the Cistern Lid. Don’t stitch over the edge of the cistern lid. Stich through the underside of the lid just above the edge.

Join the Seat Cover to the Seat. The join should be as long as the opening in the cover. Stitch through the opening left in the cover and through the edge of the seat.

Join the Seat to the bowl.

Join the Cistern to the Seat.

Join the Pipe to the Cistern.

Join the Pipe to the Bowl. Curve the pipe so that it sits on the bowl and stitch together. The bend in the pipe should be in line with the base of the toilet. Secure the pipe to the base of the toilet with a few stitches.

Join the Cistern Stand to the Cistern. The stand was added to give the toilet a bit of stability. Join it on just behind the pipe.

Join the Flush to the Cistern.

You're finished! Congratulations. Now go have a cup of tea or a coffee and wrap those aching hands around the hot mug. Oh, go on, have a piece of cake, too.

  3. what a marvelous talent you have. why such silly things?

  4. Thanks. I suppose because I am a bit silly :) I'm attracted to goofy, wacky things, and get a good laugh from the unexpectedly weird. I watched a lot of cartoons when I was growing up (still do, actually)so maybe that's to blame ;)

  6. Can i use that toilet?

  7. Can you use it for play time fun with your other amigurumi? Sure. As a pin cushion and scrap yarn holder? That's what I've been using it for. As a quirky gift? Why not? But if you're asking if you can "use" it, well, it's a crocheted toilet that fits in your hand and doesn't flush - it would get pretty messy and I don't recommend trying ;)
