The Toilet

Here is Walter's Toilet. It was a bit of a challenge but fun to make. I hope you guys like it.

The Toilet

Size

16cm/16.5in Tall, 16cm/16.5in deep, 12.5 cm/5in wide

Skill Level

Difficult. The pattern has many parts and uses different shaping techniques. It requires crocheting around a chain. You can find instructions on how to do this here. I’ve included photos of the different stages of joining and if you need any help, please get in touch.

Note on yarn and hook size

I crochet with a light worsted (DK) weight yarn. You can use a slightly heavier or lighter yarn as long as you use the same type of yarn for the different colours. This will ensure your project is in proportion. Use a hook size that will give you a nice firm stitch. The 3.00mm is my favourite hook.

Plastic pellets/dried beans and stocking

Terminology

***This pattern is written using US crochet terminology*** 

ch – Chain

hdc – Half double crochet. Yarn over hook, insert in stich, pull through all three loops on hook. 

Loops – This term covers back and front loops of a stitch.

Rnd – Round

sc – Single crochet

sc2tog – Single crochet two stitches together.

sl st – Slip stitch

st – Stitch. This term covers ch, sc, hdc, sl st and other stitches used in crochet.

Make a ring – The starting point for crocheting in a spiral. Use which ever method you prefer.

( ) – The number of stitches that should be in a completed round are placed in brackets at the end of that round’s instructions.

Form the bowl of the toilet by sinking the top of your work down. The coloured yarn that you used to mark round 17 should sit on top of the rim of the bowl. Lightly stuff the wall of the bowl. Stitch the outside of the bowl to the inside as shown in the photo, being careful not to stitch through the top round. You will continue to crochet in this round to form the pedestal the bowl sits on. Refer to photos below.

Base of Toilet Bowl (in White)

Make a ring.

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for joining. Secure some plastic pellets/dried beans in some stocking and place it in the bottom of the toilet bowl. This is used instead of polyester filling to help the toilet stand a little better. I added some extra weight by putting in a couple of coins in as well. Stitch the base of the toilet bowl to the bottom of the toilet bowl.

Cistern (in White)

Instead of crocheting around a ring, the cistern is made by crocheting around a chain to give it a more oblong shape. Instructions on how to crochet around a chain can be found here.

Seat (in White)

The seat is basically a flattened tube. By working hdc and sc on opposite sides of the tube, it twists around into a circle. To avoid the tube twisting into a spiral, where the hdc and sc are placed in a round is adjusted every ten rounds.

Fasten off. Make two, leaving a long tail on one for joining. Place them together, the right sides facing each other (the side that faces you when you’re crocheting), and stitch them together. Leave a 5cm/2in opening and turn inside out.

Pipe (in White)

Stuff as you go.

Assembly

***These are guidelines only. Be guided by your own eye at all times.***

Stuff the Cistern and join to the Cistern Lid. Don’t stitch over the edge of the cistern lid. Stich through the underside of the lid just above the edge.

Join the Seat Cover to the Seat. The join should be as long as the opening in the cover. Stitch through the opening left in the cover and through the edge of the seat.

Join the Seat to the bowl. 

Join the Cistern to the Seat.

Join the Pipe to the Cistern.

Join the Pipe to the Bowl. Curve the pipe so that it sits on the bowl and stitch together. The bend in the pipe should be in line with the base of the toilet. Secure the pipe to the base of the toilet with a few stitches.

Join the Cistern Stand to the Cistern. The stand was added to give the toilet a bit of stability. Join it on just behind the pipe.

Join the Flush to the Cistern.

You're finished! Congratulations. Now go have a cup of tea or a coffee and wrap those aching hands around the hot mug. Oh, go on, have a piece of cake, too.
