Ghost Mouse

It’s Friday the 13^th and I suddenly had an urge to put up a spooky themed pattern. So here is the Ghost Mouse.

He was made in a bit of a hurry, so let me know if there are any mistakes or if anything is unclear. He’s a funny little thing. Without his tail, nose and ears he looks a lot like a bird, so you may see some of his parts reused for another pattern. He was going to be paired with a black cat, but unfortunately I couldn't finish the cat in time. I’ll try to finish it by the end of next week.

Ghost Mouse

Size

11cm/4 1/3 in tall, 12cm/4 1/2 in wide (including arms)

Skill Level

Easy to moderate. You will need to do a half double crochet and a half double crochet 2tog for this pattern. Apart from that, it is not too complicated.

Note on yarn and hook size

I crochet with a light worsted (DK) weight yarn. You can use a slightly heavier or lighter yarn as long as you use the same type of yarn for the different colours. This will ensure your toy is in proportion. Use a hook size that will give you a nice firm stitch. The 3.00mm is my favourite hook.

Terminology
***This pattern is written using US crochet terminology***

ch – Chain

Rnd – Round

hdc – Half double crochet. Yarn over hook, insert hook in stitch, pull a loop through stitch, yarn over and pull yarn through all three loops on hook.

sc – Single crochet

hdc2tog – Half double crochet two stitches together. Yarn over hook, insert hook in stitch, pull loop through stitch, yarn over, insert hook in next stich, pull loop through, yarn over and pull yarn through all five loops on hook.

sc2tog – Single crochet two stitches together.

sl st – Slip stitch

st – Stitch. This term covers ch, sc, hdc, sl st and other stitches used in crochet.

Make a ring – The starting point for crocheting in a spiral. Use which ever method you prefer.

( ) – The number of stitches that should be in a completed round are placed in brackets at the end of that round’s instructions.

Make a ring.

Rnd 1: 6 sc in ring (6)

Rnd 2: 2 sc in each st around (12)

Rnd 3: *sc in next st, 2 sc in next st*  around (18)

Rnd 4: *sc in next 2 st, 2 sc in next st*  around (24)

Rnd 5: *sc in next 5 st, 2 sc in next st*  around (28)

Rnd 6: *sc in next 6 st, 2 sc in next st*  around (32)

Rnd 7: sc in each st around

Rnd 8: *sc in next 6 st, sc2tog*  around (28)

Close up hole and fasten off. Weave in ends.

Arms (in White)

Make a ring.

Rnd 1: 4 sc in ring (4)

Rnd 2: *sc in next st, 2 sc in next st*  around (6)

Rnd 4: *sc in next 3 st, 2 sc in next st*  around (10)

Rnd 7: dc in next 6 st, slst in next st

Fasten off, leaving tail for joining to the body. To prepare the arms for joining to the body, weave the tail through the last three single crochets, drawing it through the fourth. This will be the top of the arm. Leave unstuffed. Make two.

Snout (in White)

Make a ring.

Rnd 1: 4 sc in ring (4)

Rnd 2: *sc in next st, 2 sc in next st*  around (6)

Rnd 3: *sc in next 2 st, 2 sc in next st*  around (8)

Rnd 4: *sc in next st, 2 sc in next st*  around (12)

Fasten off, leaving tail for joining to the body. The snout will need a little bit of stuffing.

Nose (in Light Grey)

Make a ring.

Rnd 1: 4 sc in ring (4)

Rnd 2: 2 sc in each st around (8)

Rnd 3: sc in each st around

Rnd 4: sc2tog around (4)

Fasten off, leaving a tail. The nose is going to be squashed. To do this, using a needle, thread the yarn through the nose to the top, out through the starting ring. Bring the yarn back down through the nose and pull gently to squash it. Fasten off, leaving tail to join to the snout. (For photos, refer to the nose section of the Oddball Mice pattern)

Ears (in White)

Make a ring.

Rnd 1: 6 sc in ring (6)

Rnd 2: 2 sc in each st around (12)

Rnd 3: *sc in next st, 2 sc in next st*  around (18)

Rnd 4: *sc in next 2 st, 2 sc in next st*  around (24)

Rnd 5: *sc in next 2 st, sc2tog*  around (18)

Rnd 6: *sc in next st, sc2tog*  around (12)

Fasten off, leaving tail for joining to the body. Leave unstuffed. Make two.

Tail (Pink or Black)

Chain 17

Row 1: Slst in 2^nd chain from the end, slst in next 16 chains.

Fasten off, leaving tail for joining to the body.

Assembly

***These are guidelines only. Be guided by your own eye at all times.***

Join the arms to the body. Attach them just below the neck.

Join the snout to the body. The bottom of the snout sits just on the neck.

Join the nose to the snout. Stitch it to the very tip of the snout.

Join the ears to the body. Ears are attached to the side of the head, a little above the neck, in line with the arms.

Join the Tail to the body. Lie the tail so that it goes up the centre of the back of the mouse. Join one end to the bottom.

Make felt eyes and join to body. Cut out two oval shapes from white felt. Attach two small circles of grey felt to the bottom of the ovals with thread or glue. Attach to the body with thread or glue.
