I want to share my cold with you (particularly with
Dannie-K118 and CodyJunk) … but in the nicest, most hygienic way.
Here are the patterns for all the crocheted items that were featured
in last week’s post. Have fun!
Edit: Added note under Terminology section that the pattern is written using US terminology.
Note on yarn and hook size
I crochet with a light worsted (DK) weight yarn. You can use
a slightly heavier or lighter yarn as long as you use the same type of yarn for
the different colours. This will ensure your toy is in proportion. Use a hook
size that will give you a nice firm stitch. The 3.00mm is my favourite hook.
Terminology

The Common Cold
Size
5cm/2in high
Skill Level
Easy. The spikes are 4 single crochets around, so
they are a little fiddly to crochet and join. Changing to a smaller hook for
this part of the pattern may make it a little easier.
Materials
Yarn
Whatever colour you like. I recommend a sickly green.
Crochet Hook – 3.00mm or
preferred size
Filling
Tapestry needle
White and Black Felt
Needle and thread/Glue for attaching felt
Instructions

Finish stuffing firmly. Close up hole and fasten off. Weave

Small Spike
Make a ring.
Rnd 1: 4 sc in ring
Rnd 2: sc in each st around
Fasten off, leaving a tail to use for joining. Leave
unstuffed. Make three.
Large Spike
Make a ring.
Rnd 1: 4 sc in ring
Rnd 2-3: sc in each st around
Fasten off, leaving a tail to use for joining. Leave
unstuffed. Make two.
Assembly
Join spikes to body. The two large spikes go on
either side of the pointy end of the body. They look a little like to arms
raised in the air. The small spikes are arranged at the bottom of the body – two
at the front, like two little stumpy legs, and one at the back, like a little
tail.
Add eyes and eyebrows. The eyes are a tiny circle of
black felt on a small circle of white. To make the eyebows cut out a v-shape
from black felt. Attach to the body using needle and thread or glue. I like to use felt to make facial features on my toys (because I'm rubbish at embroidering), but
it can be a bit tricky to cut and join felt especially when the toys are small like
these guys are. If you’re good at embroidering on yarn features, then do this
for the face. Here’s an example of what that may look like.

Assembly
Add eyes and eyebrows. Use the same method for making
the eyes and eyebrows as you used for the Common Cold.
Arrange the droplets around the splat, putting the smaller
droplets in between the larger ones.
And that’s it. Now you have a Common Cold. Start
ker-splatting!
Those are just too cute! I'm making it and the next time my husband complains he's getting "sick" I'm splatting it. Thank you!! CodyJunk.
ReplyDeleteHehe my pleasure, CodyJunk. If you're making them for your husband, should they be twice as big with ferocious teeth? Because everyone knows the 'Man Cold' is much worse than the normal cold ;)
ReplyDeleteThere's a youtube video about the Man Cold. It's pretty funny: Man Stroke Woman-Man Cold
Love em! hehe Just perfect!
ReplyDeleteMy husband had a pretty bad cold a few yrs ago and you'd swear he had died, awwww poor baby, not! lol
Thanks, Patty!
DeleteIn my experience the saying 'the stronger they are, the harder they fall' applies to colds. I know people who've complained less about surgery than they have a cold. Hehe it's just one of those things, I guess :)
I can't wait to make these little buggers(i call germs and other things like them buggers)!
ReplyDeleteNasty little buggers they are hehe have fun with it :)
