Here is the pattern for the Shrunken Head Guy from Beetlejuice and the bride I made for him.
Don't worry about getting things exactly right with this pattern. Any mistakes you make will most likely benefit the appearance of your Shrunken Head person. Have fun with it, be creative and make some truly ghoulish characters.
Let me know if you need any help or if you run into any mistakes.
Edit: I forgot to add the ears to the pattern section! They have now been added to the end of the pattern section. I've specified which hook to use in brackets next to section headings.

Assembly
***These are
guidelines only. Be guided by your own eye at all times.***
Add the nose to the head. First you need to cut out a triangle of black felt. The triangle
should be about 6 chains high and 5 chains wide. Use the chain you have
crocheted for the nose to measure it out. Using black thread, stitch the felt
triangle to the middle of the head. Pin the nose to the head over the felt as
shown in the photos and stitch on using the tail of yarn left on the nose.
Add the mouth to the head. Cut out a rectangle of black felt a little smaller than the lower
mouth. Stitch the rectangle on about a finger width below the nose. Pin the
upper mouth and lower mouth in position over the felt rectangle. Join to the
head by stitching around the outside of the upper and lower mouth. Don’t stitch
the lips down. Use the tails of yarn left on the mouth sections to join them to
the head.
Join the eye sockets to the head. Pin on either side of the nose and join to the head using the tails
of yarn left on the sockets.
Join the brows to the head. The important thing to note with the two brow pieces is that each
one has an end with 4 slip stitches and an end with 6 slip stitches. The 4 slip
stitch end should sit in between the eye sockets and 6 slip stitch end should
sit on the outside of the eye socket. Pin the brows over the eye sockets and
stitch on using the tails of yarn left on the brows.
Join the cheekbones to the head. Pin the cheekbones under the eye sockets as shown in the photo and
stitch on using the tail of yarn left on the cheekbones.
Join the hair cap onto the head. The narrower section of the cap sits on the forehead, the wider
section sits on the back of the neck. Stitch on to the top of the head using
the tail of yarn left on the hair cap.
Add hair.
There are different methods for adding hair to crocheted toys. One method is to
take strands of yarn and loop them through the stitches of the head of the toy
as shown in this tutorial on esshaych.blogspot.com. This is a simple method but the hairline of your
shrunken head will be a little knotty.
Another method is to stitch each strand of
hair on using cotton thread. I used this method for my first Shrunken Head Guy.
It’s a slow process and there are faster and better ways to add hair … but
there is something relaxing and enjoyable about adding hair a single strand at
a time. Only recommended if you want to spend as much time as possible with your
creation.
For this project I recommend making a yarn fringe
then attaching it to the Shrunken Head. Here is a tutorial on how to make a
yarn fringe. Stitch the yarn fringe on using cotton thread the same colour as the yarn. The shrunken head guy and gal have their hair tied up so they only
need to have hair around the edge of the hair cap. If you wish to have the hair
hang loose than you will need to zigzag the fringe over the head to avoid a
bald spot.
Making the hair stick up. I used fabric stiffener to make the Shrunken Head Guy’s hair stick
up. I tied the hair into the shape I wanted, saturated it in watered down fabric stiffener then let it dry for a few days. It worked quite well and is still holding its shape.
Join eyes to head. Stuff the eyes and pin to the eye sockets. Stitch on using the tails
of yarn left on the eyes. Cut out a small circle of black felt for the pupil
and stich on to the centre of the eye.
Don’t forget the ears! I always forget the ears. Pin the ears to the side of the head and
stitch on.
And finally, add mouth stitches. Using brown or grey yarn, add ghoulish stitches to the mouth.
And you are done! If you do make a Shrunken Head Person, please, please, please send me a photo.

This is too cute! What a great Halloween decoration!
ReplyDeleteI hate to bother you but where is the ear pattern its not up there with the others.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for sharing with us.
Ahh sorry about that. There is something about the ears. I always forget them. The ears have been added to the end of the pattern section. Thank you so much for picking that up and letting me know :)
DeleteIf using redheart yarn 4ply,what size hooks do I use. I don't understand what 3.00 and 4.5 sizes. Are they the steel ones or D,F? Please advize me because I have the letter ones B thru Q.
ReplyDeleteThanks in advance
I love your blog and want to make them so bad.
Again Thanks for sharing with everyone.
I believe the Redheart 4 ply is a worsted weight yarn (someone correct me if I’m wrong). This is a little thicker than the yarn I use so it might give you a bigger shrunken head but not by much. I describe my hooks using metric sizes. Here is a conversion table for future reference. For 3.0mm use a C or D hook. For 4.5mm I would use the G. I will make it clearer where to use which hooks where in the pattern.
DeleteIf you want to make a simple Shrunken Head, I would leave out the brows and the cheekbones. They add shape but aren’t strictly necessary.
Let me know if anything else is unclear. It is quite an involved pattern so ask as many questions as you need to.
Wow- this is the weirdest but also one of the best crochet patterns I've ever seen! Thanks for sharing, it's helping me relive my teen years!
ReplyDeleteHehe, no worries :)
DeleteThanks for hook sizes and I'll make them in bigger sizes. How would someone send a picture to you when completed to show you the results. I'll be creative with your pattern to make a dead zombie person with its own personality.
ReplyDeleteThanks again for sharing this awsume pattern.
You can email me at woollytoons@gmail.com. Also, I'm on flickr and ravelry under the username WoollyToons if you wanted to get in touch through those sites.
DeleteHope you have fun with the pattern. I can't wait to see your creation!
I also used bigger hooks and no felt pieces. I used small hook and thread to crochet a triagle from a templete I made using your chs as sugested in pattern for the felt pieces. Didn't get a picture because my camera wasn't working, but it turn out fine and it ended going to a friend before I could get someone to take a picture for me.
ReplyDeleteI plan on another one in a few days and picture of it. Thanks so much and your so talented too.
I'm glad it worked out and love that it ended up being a gift :)
